The Castle of San Vito otherwise known as Borgo di Muzio or Borgo Mozzo is one of the three hills of Recanati, together with Monte Morello and Monte Volpino, whose union has allowed the formation of the city.
San Vito also venerated as San Vito martire or San Vito di Lucania (Mazara, III century - Lucania, 15 June 303), was a young Christian who suffered martyrdom for the faith in 303 and is revered as a saint by all the churches that admit the cult of the saints.
The liturgical memory is to be remembered on June 15, March 20. Vito was one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages, his figure was shrouded in legend: Vito, Sicilian by birth, at just seven years of age is a convinced Christian and begins to work various wonders. The principal Valeriano orders his arrest and tries with flattery and threats to make him apostatized. But the passionate appeals of his father are also useless. In fact, little Vito has at his side, an example of courage and fidelity, his own pedagogue Modesto and his nurse Crescenzia. The three, prodigiously freed by an angel, can retire to Lucania, where they continue to bear witness to their faith with the word and with the wonders. The fame of St. Vito reaches the ears of Diocletian, whose son is ill with epilepsy, a disease so impressive at the time. S. Vito, sent to Rome, heals his peer and is rewarded for torture and thrown back to prison. But the angel frees him and finally, having returned to Lucania, Vito can give Modesto and Crescenzia the supreme testimony of martyrdom.
San Vito is invoked in cases of: Epilepsy, Hysteria, Obsession, Hydrophobia, Tarantism, Lightning and bad weather, Fires, Sterility, Insomnia. He is the protector of: Pharmacists, Brewers, Hoteliers, Bottai, Calderai, Muti e deaf, Winegrowers, Actors, Dancers.
The Church of San Vito, in Recanati, has been named since 1228, awarded the title of Concattedrale, which it shared with San Flaviano Vecchio, it was the central church of the city that was formed by the union of the Three Castles. It was renovated with a triple nave and extended towards the end of the 1400s. From 1448 to 1524 it was officiated by the Carmelite Fathers and following the bull of Pope Gregory XII in 1577, with the rectory it was ceded to the Jesuits who opened their own College in Recanati, starting a long series of restorations which ended two centuries later with the construction of the facade. It had its current forms in 1647 based on a design by Pier Paolo Jacometti. The earthquake of 1741, (called by Monaldo Leopardi in the Annals, the "San Marco earthquake") ruined the facade, which was completely rebuilt according to a design by architect Nicoletti. After three years following the precarious conditions of the facade, the architect Luigi Vanvitelli was commissioned (very present at the time in the Marche, e.g. the Lazzaretto, the Church of the Gesù and the pier in Ancona). Currently the appearance of the church of San Vito, in terracotta with dichromatic spiral columns appears as a correct and suggestive interpretation of the late Baroque culture.
Attached to the church is the Oratory of the Nobles, where the young Leopardi recited his Reasonings on the Passion, and where there is a beautiful canvas by Pomarancio "Presentation". On the side of the high altar there is the tomb of Nicola Bobadilla, a distinguished philosopher and preacher.
