Joseph Anton Vogel (Altkirch, 23 marzo 1756 – Loreto, 26 agosto 1817) è stato uno storico e letterato francese. Fu esemplare figura di erudito settecentesco, fondamentale per la formazione culturale e per la storiografia di molti comuni delle Marche. Fu canonico onorario a Recanati nel 1809 e a Loreto nel 1814.
Scrisse il "Commentarius historicus de ecclesiis Recanatensi et Lauretana".
Dal 1802 al 1814 il Vogel risiedé a Recanati per riordinare l'archivio comunale. Per la sua perizia come archivista fu introdotto nel 1809 alla famiglia Leopardi, anche qui per ordinarne la biblioteca, ma successivamente nacque una profonda amicizia con il conte Monaldo, che ne richiese l'opera quale precettore per il figlio. La presenza in casa del Vogel, che portava testimonianza dei fermenti culturali europei fu molto importante nella primissima educazione del giovane Giacomo
Nel 1780 si laureò in teologia all'Università cattolica di Strasburgo e nel 1789 divenne parroco di Obermorschwiller.
In seguito alla rivoluzione francese rifiutò di prestare giuramento alla costituzione civile e fuggì in Italia. Giunse esule in Italia nel 1794, nello Stato della Chiesa e si stabilì a Fermo, ove grazie alla sua erudizione, che univa ad una vivace curiosità per tutte le discipline, iniziò a farsi conoscere quale esperto archivista ed apprezzato compilatore dei cataloghi e delle biblioteche familiari e nobiliari. Fecondissimo studioso di testi antichi, fu instancabile catalogatore di notizie storiche municipali e si mise in luce anche nella sistemazione degli archivi pubblici di molti paesi del Fermano, assieme allo storico Giuseppe Colucci; risistemò ed ordinò tra gli altri gli archivi comunali di Matelica, dove risalì alle origini dell'industria cartaria fabrianese, e di Cingoli. Lasciò un'enorme quantità di manoscritti, tuttora fonte preziosissima per la ricostruzione del periodo storico, in particolare quello medievale, di diversi comuni marchigiani.
Muore a Loreto il 26 Agosto 1817. 

 

Joseph Anton Vogel (Altkirch, 23 March 1756 - Loreto, 26 August 1817) was a French historian and writer. He was an exemplary eighteenth-century scholar, fundamental for the cultural formation and historiography of many municipalities in the Marche. He was an honorary canon in Recanati in 1809 and in Loreto in 1814.
He wrote the "Commentarius historicus de ecclesiis Recanatensi et Lauretana".
From 1802 to 1814 the Vogel resided in Recanati to rearrange the municipal archive. For his expertise as an archivist he was introduced in 1809 to the Leopardi family, also here to order the library, but subsequently a deep friendship was born with Count Monaldo, who requested his work as a tutor for his son. The presence in the house of Vogel, who bore testimony of European cultural ferments was very important in the very early education of the young Giacomo
In 1780 he graduated in theology at the Catholic University of Strasbourg and in 1789 he became parish priest of Obermorschwiller.
Following the French Revolution he refused to take an oath to the civil constitution and fled to Italy. He arrived exiled in Italy in 1794, in the State of the Church and settled in Fermo, where thanks to his erudition, which combined with a lively curiosity for all disciplines, he began to make himself known as an expert archivist and appreciated compiler of catalogs and family libraries and noblemen. A very fruitful scholar of ancient texts, he was a tireless cataloger of municipal historical information and also put himself in the spotlight in the arrangement of the public archives of many towns in the Fermano area, together with the historian Giuseppe Colucci; He restored and ordered, among others, the municipal archives of Matelica, where he traced the origins of the Fabrianese paper industry, and of Cingoli. He left an enormous quantity of manuscripts, still a very precious source for the reconstruction of the historical period, in particular the medieval one, of various Marche municipalities.
He died in Loreto on August 26, 1817.
