In the back of Leopardi Palace is the convent of Santo Stefano Parish Church from 1394 and the monastery of Franciscan nuns established in 1443 and suppressed in 1486.
Construction of the monastery began in 1507 while it became active with the entry of the nuns in 1535.
The Church dedicated to Santo Stefano in 1691 was structured with vaulted ceilings and completed with remarkable decorations and stuccoes. The Monastery was suppressed in 1810 by the French government, dispersing a rich heritage of art belonging to the convent (paintings by Pomarancio, Fanelli, etc.).
The presence of the daughters of the Sacred Heart who came from Bergamo in 1852 favors a series of restorations to the Church and the Convent in 1928. For many decades the young girls of the Recanatese bourgeoisie were entrusted and educated by the nuns.
Currently, the municipal property complex is undergoing renovation and intended for public use, as a venue for conferences and cultural events related to the activities of the World Poetry Center.
