Flaviano di Ricina was the first bishop of Helvia Recina, he is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
Bishop Flaviano was probably the first bishop of Ricina, an ancient Roman city in the Marches founded by the Piceni.
He lived in the third century and we do not know how he was martyred, but he probably fell in the number of martyrs, in large quantities during the reign of the emperors Decius and Valerian, which affected many bishops of the time.
To promote the figure of this holy martyr was his successor to the bishopric of Helvia Recina: Claudio, another very revered saint from the Marche region, especially in the Macerata area, colonized by the inhabitants of the Roman Ricinese municipality fleeing the barbarian invasions towards the hills considered more defensible of the ancient Helvia Recina located in the middle of the Potenza valley.
It is often confused with the homonymous Patriarch of Constantinople, who lived two centuries after the bishop of Ricina. After his martyrdom, his bones were placed in a church in the Roman city.
With its destruction in the 5th or 6th century, its cult spread to the city of Recanati, which had just been founded by the Ricinese fleeing to the hills.
But not all the Ricinians chose to flee to the east, another group instead headed for the hills to the southwest to found Macerata. Built by the Benedictines an Abbey near Pollenza above a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Bona, this abbey took the name of Rambona and the remains of the bishop-martyr seem to have been placed in a sarcophagus in the crypt of the abbey after the escape from the city by Helvia Recina. The Abbot, later saint, of Rambona Amico, used to pray in front of the sarcophagus with the remains of Bishop Flaviano of Ricina.
The remains found in the sarcophagus examined in Rambona date back to the time of San Flaviano even if there is no documentary support on the actual burial of the saint in this Abbey.
San Flaviano da Ricina is remembered on November 24, generally referred to as the date of his martyrdom. He is co-patron of the city of Recanati, even if other sources consider the patron of Recanati Flaviano Patriarch of Constantinople, whose remains are venerated in the church of the same name in Giulianova, but some relics are found in the Recanati church dedicated to him.
