The Adriatic Sea is the articulation of the Mediterranean Sea located between the Italian peninsula and the Balkan peninsula.
It bathes six countries: Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania. It is about 800 km long and 150 km wide, covering an area of 132,000 km². The depth in some areas reaches 300 m in the northern part and reaches 1 222 m further south, along the route from Bari to the mouth of Cattaro. The average salinity is 3.8%, with strong differences between the north, less saline, and the south. The sea is present in Leopardi's work.
Leopardi was referring to the Adriatic Sea, which he admired from his home.
Leopardi claimed to be in Recanati and to turn his gaze, from there, to the distant sea, which could only be the sea of Porto Recanati. Between the years 1809 and 1815, from the eleventh to the seventeenth of his life, Leopardi's sea was populated with monsters and full of myths and legends.
Leopardi mentioned, on several occasions, the curious belief about the turning off, in the evening, of the sun sizzling in the sea, observing that this was one of the dreams that denoted a child Astronomy, he smiled on the belief in seas and rivers like the terrestrial ones existing on the Moon and benevolently derided the various schools of thought relating to the "hunger" of the stars, which would have often been satisfied in the sea and from the sea. On the fantasy of the sun, and also of other celestial bodies, which at night found refuge in the depths of the oceans, Leopardi returned in the "Essay on the popular errors of the ancients", to ironize on the vulgar opinion of the ancients rather certain that the sun, setting, yearning for the heat, went to cool off in the sea water. The poet didn't stop referring to legends and myths and to divine beings or divine seeds of the sea in the works of the first and then of full intellectual maturity.
Now the picture in which the creatures of the dream appear is that of becoming aware of the solid nothingness and evil that surround us. In the same years in which the imagination rides the newts and almost lets you hear the screeching of the waters as the sun plunges into the ocean, the precocious teenager does not neglect to approach the sea with scientific interest. It will be a largely “read” knowledge, based almost entirely on what he learned from books or on what he understood by someone who approached directly the sea. The topic that interested Leopardi was the ebb and flow of sea waves. However, what fascinated him the most was the spectacle of the stormy sea, a manifestation of irrepressible and blind power, born in the profound mystery of the abyss. There are many references, starting with the very first literary production. It is worth retaining the image of the sparkling waves, the white foam that adorns the crest of the monstrous wave, because it will rarely be absent from Leopardi's paintings of the angry sea. Which arouses a feeling of fear mixed with admiration for the immense force of unleashed nature; here the sea finds the variety requested by Leopardi from the poetic subject, it is a non-uniform, dynamic, engaging show. But the sea has its own strength of fascination, just by virtue of its immensity, which is not easy for anyone to escape. Nor was it for Leopardi who, on the contrary, was able to fully exploit the poetic appeal.
Moreover, Leopardi's sea is often “far away”, far from his eyes, indeterminate, vague. The element of distance gains depth in Leopardi's production after adolescence. They are glimpses of the sea caught by the poet who observed them from the top of the hill, whether the Adriatic was shaken by the scream of the wind or immobile in the flat morning brightness.
