Monte Vettore (from the latin victor, winner) is the highest mountain relief of the Sibillini Mountains massif, with its 2,476 meters of altitude, included within the Sibillini Mountains National Park, belonging to the municipality of Montemonaco, province of Ascoli Piceno.
It is located in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines on the border between Umbria and Marche. Its peak, located in the territory of the Marche region, is the highest of a mountainous arch that has a characteristic "U" shape and which includes, following the arch from west to east, Quarto San Lorenzo, Cima del Redentore (2,448 m), Cima del Lago, the Vettore itself, Monte Vettoretto (2,032 m) and Monte Torrone (2,102 m).
On the northern slope of Mount Vettore, in the natural basin embraced by the mountainous arch, at 1,941 meters above sea level is Lake Pilato.
The external façade of the mountainous arch instead dominates the Pian Grande di Castelluccio di Norcia, a valley rich in crops of lentils, a characteristic legume of the place.
From the top of the mountain you can admire on clear days the Gran Sasso to the south-east and the Terminillo to the south-west, the coast of the Marche and the Adriatic sea to the east.
On the southern slopes of the mountain, at an altitude of 2,238 m a.s.l., the Tito Zilioli refuge managed by the C.A.I .. Monte Vettore has a transversal strip of gravel which is called the "fairy road". The popular legend has it that once, the fairies stopped longer to dance with the young people of Pretare and that in order not to be surprised at dawn, they fled with such precipitation that they left their footprints on the mountain, thus creating their own path. The tale is known both to the scholars of popular traditions and to the people of the valley.
From mythology we learn that the Sibillini mountains were considered places inhabited by good and bad divinities. The presence of caves and mysterious caverns were considered access to the kingdom of the underworld, like the one Virgil talks about in the sixth canto of the Aeneid.
