The two rivers Musone and Potenza with their numerous streams gave way to development and civilization in the Recanati area. When the Picenes arrived there in pre-Roman times, older housing units already existed.

The current city, despite a legendary history that traces it back to a Roman colony ("Recina sum, peperit romana colonia" written by the people of the 16th century under the city coat of arms), was established at the end of the XII century when the lords of the three heights decided to join.

The three hills (Monte Volpino, Monte San Vito and Monte Morello), preserve their ancient names and construction features.

In Monte Volpino there is still a house lined by an arch that dates back to the oldest era in the city.

At the beginning of the investiture struggle, Recanati supported Federico II and in exchange had the license to build a port between the Aspio and Potenza outlets and the exemption from duties.

The alliance with the Ghibellines is also testified by the battlements of the civic tower. The Bolla Aurea of the Emperor is kept in Villa Colloredo Mels Museum and is one of the most interesting examples of the Suevian presence in Italy.

Subsequently Recanati sided with the bishops and the Pope and received the right to be called a city and to stamp out money. Famous for its Statutes, Fair and Trades, conducted in part by Jews, generously welcomed Albanian emigrants and slaves to whom entrusted lands to cultivate

The fame of Justissima Civitas was due to the competence of its magistrates, whose sentences were also requested in large municipalities. Built on the crest of a hill, it was protected by a solid circle of walls, reinforced by Francesco Sforza and in which there were narrow gaps closed by gateways.
